With Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft set out to build a more secure Web browser, and 16 months into its launch, the company is touting a major security milestone.

Browsers are a favorite entry point for hackers looking to spread malware, elevating security to a top priority for outfits like Microsoft and Mozilla. With the release of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft built in technology dubbed the SmartScreen Filter, which it credits for blocking 1 billion downloads of malware since it's been on the market.

Microsoft attributes the spike in intercepted malware both to SmartScreen, and to the gains in market share the company has enjoyed with the release of IE8. eSecurity Planet has the story.

Microsoft announced this week that Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) has now blocked a billion malware downloads since its release last year.

The disclosure came in a post to Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Exploring IE blog Monday.
